PMYC fills the music education and performance opportunity gap for area vocalists. No other organization in the area does what PMYC does.
Singers with PMYC learn how to use their voice as an instrument through participation in age and ability appropriate ensembles, artistic collaborations, performances, and a diverse and challenging repertoire. Singers are divided into four ensembles, each taught by a highly trained Conductor and a professional accompanist. Singers rehearse weekly after school in preparation for 10-15 performances each season. This process, in conjunction with additional youth empowerment programming, gives singers the skills they need to succeed in school and in life.
Decades of research prove that participation in a youth chorus promotes self-confidence, teamwork, social skills, responsibility and increased concentration. Music students get better grades, are more likely to attend college and score higher on the SAT. Choral singing even increases happiness by boosting levels of oxytocin!
Researchers have found that one reason some children thrive amidst challenging conditions at home or at school is something called an ‘identity project’ – a hobby or passion that some are lucky enough to find and immerse themselves in. For kids who love to sing, PMYC can provide that purpose, mission or inspiration that helps young people overcome obstacles and succeed.
For kids who love to sing, PMYC can be life changing. This is what a PMYC 8th grader said about her years with the chorus: “Pro Musica has been such a big part of my life. I’ve learned how to be a leader, how to be a mentor, how to make friends, how to take care of people, how to sight read, how to conduct. I’m who I am today because of this chorus.”
Some PMYC singers will go on to study music in college or develop careers in music. All singers will develop a sophisticated ear, a love of music that will enrich their entire lives, and a level of personal strength built from their experiences with PMYC. There is no other singing organization – in or out of school – that provides this level of music education, performance opportunity, and youth empowerment.
PMYC is a tuition plus fundraising non-profit organization, which is the financial model followed by most community youth choruses in the country. Like many music education programs (band, orchestra, theater) tuition only covers a portion of the total costs to run the organization. The remainder comes from a mix of grants, fund-raisers, ticket fees and donations.
In fact, individual donations like yours account for more than 30% of our total operating costs. Please help us continue the important work we do for young people and the community by making a donation today!
